Why More Joy?
Responsive, Caring, Holistic Psychiatry from Home
Our Philosophy
James Tranter is a child/youth and psychotherapy psychiatrist providing high quality telehealth (and soon, in-person) psychiatry from his home on the Mornington Peninsula in Australia. He has a special interest in trauma, mood-disorders, neurodiversity, and emerging therapies, but is open to clients with a wide range of expressions of distress.
Every life includes a medley of desirable and undesirable emotions; from happiness through sadness through frustration, this breadth of feeling gives richness to life. For some of us, whether it be due to genetic endowment, damaging and traumatic events, or the impact of past or present environments, our lives become stuck in a limited pattern of thoughts and emotions that leave us trapped. Most often, it is the delicate feelings like Joy that are lost first.

We place Joy at the centre of our philosophy, because when our thorny problems peel away and we find recovery, we are left with exactly the ease of mind that allows for a little More Joy.

Our Treatments
An approach to psychiatric care that equally privileges brain, mind, and body, all with a dash of fun
Medications
An important part of some recovery journeys
Healing from long-term and complex mental health issues is made easier by using every technology available. Medication treatments can be an essential component of achieving a steady state of mind, maintaining improvements, preventing relapse, and facilitating deeper insights into your life and difficulties. As a psychiatrist, James can guide you in the best evidence-based tools, including medication, for your recovery.

Younger Patients
Support for developing brains
Growing up is a tumultuous and challenging time for many, and mental illness can add another layer of difficulty. As a child/adolescent psychiatrist, James can help you or your child to navigate critical life stages and changes. For now, James only accepts patients from high school age and up, but this may change in time.
Talk Therapy
Psychotherapy for all ages
We provide a wide range of talking therapy approaches, encompassing psychoanalysis, structured therapy models (DBT, MBT), cognitive approaches (Schema Therapy, EMDR), and play therapy for younger patients. We also offer family and systemic therapy for those open to taking a wider lens on difficulties. See below for the types of therapy we offer.

Whole Body
Keeping the whole body in mind
As a qualified medical practitioner, James is equipped to help you understand and navigate the impact of physical health conditions on your mental well-being. As a qualified yoga instructor, he can help you link your body movements and lifestyle with your psychological and emotional health.
Therapy Modalities
Finding the right type of therapy is like choosing what to eat - a combination of finding what's good for you and what you like. We offer a range of therapy modalities to ensure you can access the right set of tools to meet your unique needs and preferences.
Finding the deeper roots of symptoms and difficulties
Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic Therapy
Long-term individual therapy provides the time, space, and deep connection required to discover the far-reaching causes for our distress within ourselves and across our personal story. James is a trained psychoanalytic therapist, and welcomes the opportunity to sit with you for sessions that offer the chance for honest, surprising, and necessary insights about your difficulties.
Utilising established frameworks and tools to target specific challenges
Structured Therapies
Over the past century, many therapy models have been designed and tested for particular difficulties and symptoms. James is trained in Mentalisation-Based Treatment (MBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Schema Therapy, and Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) which covers a wide range of mental health conditions and symptoms. Through an assessment, you can learn which types of therapy would be suitable for you, and receive guidance about how to access these and other treatments (whether you choose to access that therapy with James or elsewhere).
Therapy for younger persons and those living with family/carers
Play Therapy and Family/System Therapy
For younger patients, traditional talk therapy can seem intimidating, boring, or too intense. James has worked with many younger clients to bring more play, creativity, and exploration into therapy to support children and adolescents in their recovery journey. Navigating mental illness in childhood and adolescence is interwoven with the emotional and developmental journey of everyone in the home, though, and bringing everyone for therapy allows changes to benefit the whole system around a young person. All the family members will be heard, and solutions can be negotiated within the beliefs and structure of each unique family.

Education and Training
When you visit a health professional, you place your trust in their experience, skill, and training.
